Wagontrain Lake Boating Accident
June 21, 2010

On Saturday June 19, 2010, at approximately 10:22P.M., deputies and Hickman Volunteer Fire Department was detailed to Wagontrain Lake regarding a boat in distress. A storm was moving through the area at the time, causing high winds, lightning, thunder and heavy rains. The boat capsized with 3 people aboard. Michael Jones, age 55 of Lincoln was rescued by Hickman Fire as he was holding onto the overturned boat.

35 year old Chantel Gehlsen became separated from the boat and eventually made her way to shore where she was assisted by campers in the area and turned over to Fire Department personnel for treatment.

29 year old Amos Prochaska of Lincoln, the boat’s owner became separated from the craft and disappeared. Lincoln Fire Department Dive Team and Game and Parks Personnel were also involved in the search. Thermal imaging equipment, sonar and the dive team were unable to locate Prochaska. The search was suspended Saturday night due to the weather and darkness.

Sunday, June 20, the search resumed, only to be suspended again because of the severe weather conditions.

Monday, June 21, 11:45 A.M. Prochaska’s body was located in about 15 feet of water by Lincoln Fire Water Rescue Team 35 feet from where the boat sank.

None of the three passengers in the boat were wearing floatation devices. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
