Larry and his wife, Carol, live on a cattle farm near Malcolm in Lancaster County, Nebraska. They have owned and operated Hudkins Farms for over 40 years. Carol also served for 16 years as a State Senator for District 21, which represents the northwest quarter of Lincoln and Lancaster County, as well as the southern one-third of Saunders County. They have two daughters: Kathy, an industrial engineer who lives in Denmark with her husband Henrik; and Janet, a Certified Public Accountant who lives in Utah with her husband Steve.

During his experience as an exchange student behind the "Iron Curtain" in 1962, Larry made a commitment to someday be involved in public service. That involvement started with farm organizations, the Malcolm School Board, which he served on for 11 years, and service on the Lancaster Board of Commissioners since 1987.

Larry served as president of the National Association of Boards of Health, and served on the National Public Health Steering Committee. He also served as President of the Nebraska Cattleman and the Nebraska Ag Relations Council. Larry spent 13 days in China in 2010 as a member of a Trade Mission representing the Soybean Board and Farm Bureau.

Larry and Carol have traveled extensively to over 70 countries and all seven continents. Larry currently serves as President of the Nebraska Rural Radio Associatio KRVN and was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achivement. Larry was named a UNL L.E.A.D. fellow in 1983.
