Commissioner's Award of Excellence

Lincoln, NE - February 6, 2018 - Colt Lathrop, Correctional Officer at the Lancaster County Jail has been awarded with the 2017 Annual Commissioners' Award of Excellence. Lathrop received the monthly Commissioners' Award of Excellence in the category of valor prior to winning the annual award. This award is given out to only one Lancaster County employee annually. The Commissioners' Award of Excellence recognizes employees who consistently provide outstanding service and work that demonstrates exemplary personal commitment to Lancaster County.

Lathrop responded to an emergency call in one of the housing units at the Lancaster County Jail where he prevented an inmate from attempting suicide. The inmate had climbed over the upper tier railing and was tying a sheet around their neck. Lathrop was able to reach the inmate and restrain them from jumping. He restrained the inmate for more than a minute alone before additional staff could reach him and assist. The inmate was then taken to the infirmary for suicide observation and additional help.

Lancaster County Board Commissioner, Jennifer Brinkman presented Lathrop with the award and stated, "On behalf of the County Board I would like to thank you for your work, your service to the County has been very impressive and heroic."

Kelly Lundgren, Records Specialist III for the Lancaster County Clerk's office was awarded with Honorable Mention for the 2017 Annual Commissioners' Award of Excellence. Lundgren received the November 2017 monthly Award of Excellence in the category of productivity. Commissioner Deb Schorr presented Lundgren with her award, stating, "Thank you for your service to the County; we appreciate all you do; you are a pleasure and a joy to work with."
