Lincoln, NE - May 9, 2017 - Chris Podany, Engineering Technician - Bridge Inspector for the Lancaster County Department of Engineering was honored with the Commissioners' Award of Excellence at the May 9, 2017 Board of Commissioners meeting. Podany was nominated by a colleague in the category of productivity. The Commissioners' Award of Excellence recognizes employees who consistently provide outstanding service and work that demonstrates exemplary personal commitment to Lancaster County.

Podany was recognized for his sizable contribution as lead bridge inspector during the Firth Road bridge project. The Firth Road bridge project had multiple issues during construction including the unearthing of several unforeseen obstructions in the form of massive concrete abutments from a bridge built in 1928 that were abandoned and buried during the construction of its 1974 replacement. Additionally, the corrosive nature of the soil particular to the site made the project more complex than usual and required the use of additional, specialty equipment. In the nomination form, it was noted that, "Self-sacrifice has always been a part of the job for Chris who has consistently demonstrated his willingness to give of himself and his family to ensure bridges in Lancaster County get built to the highest standards of material, performance and craftsmanship possible."

Podany has been with Lancaster County for more than 28 years in the Engineering Department and has overseen the construction of many bridges. It was also noted in his nomination that Chris worked diligently with contractors and sub-contractors to provide the highest quality structure possible while ensuring the most responsible and efficient use of taxpayer dollars. It is estimated that this bridge will serve the public for the next 100 years. Podany was recognized for his ability to address citizen concerns in a positive manner. Lancaster County Board Commissioner, Roma Amundson stated, "On behalf of the County Board I would like to thank you for your continued, dedicated service to the people of Lancaster County, it is sincerely appreciated."
