Bike Patrol Unit

Mission

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office utilizes a Bike Patrol Unit to support its mission of promoting and preserving a feeling of safety and security to the public we serve.

Advantages of Patrolling by Mountain Bike

  • The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office patrols towns, villages, lakes, and hiker/biker trails in Lancaster County, allowing deputies greater access to areas not easily accessible by cruisers.
  • Patrolling by bicycle provides local residents and other citizens the opportunity to approach and observe deputies in their respective communities and recreational areas. This promotes a sense of safety and security to the public, along with a visible deterrent to the criminal element.
  • Patrolling by bicycle provides members of the Sheriff’s Office with a program that develops and promotes physically-fit deputies.
  • Patrolling by bicycle provides deputies’ additional tools to use in the course of their duties that help maintain lower costs associated with operating motorized cruisers.

Requirements/Selection

Deputies interested in the Bike Patrol Unit must be in good physical condition. The Patrol Division Captain selects members from a list of volunteers. Deputies must attend and satisfactorily complete a bike patrol training course. Deputies are taught bicycle safety, maintenance, riding techniques, suspect approach techniques, tactical dismounts, obstacle negotiations, and emergency skills.

Assignment of Bike Patrol Deputies

Deputies assigned to the Bike Patrol Unit are considered regular patrol deputies and assigned accordingly. Deputies assigned to other divisions may perform bike patrol functions for special details when permitted.
